Chief Chanel retired as an Assistant Chief of Police from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) in Washington, DC on June 4, 2022. During most of her stint as an Assistant Chief, Chief Chanel was the highest-ranking female police officer at MPD. She grew up in a marginalized community and survived multifaceted trauma. She joined the police cadet program as her fair shot. Chief Chanel attended and graduated from the District of Columbia Public School System. She used her experiences and exposure to excel in law enforcement. Chief Chanel believes that women can have it all when core values are instilled in a girl.
Chief Chanel’s law enforcement career had many rewarding moments. For the last 20 years of her career with MPD, she has served in many managerial and leadership roles. She served as a detective sergeant, and lieutenant, for a sizable portion of her career, and as a captain of MPD’s Criminal Investigations Division. Her analytical and investigative skills yielded high closure rates within the sexual assault, financial crimes, and bank robbery units to name a few. She also managed the domestic violence unit, focusing on victim services, community outreach, and education. During her tenure as the Commander of the Youth and Family Services Division, she oversaw the daily operations and investigations involving child abuse and neglect, child sexual abuse and exploitation, juvenile and adult missing person cases, absconded youth, and internet crimes against children. Under her leadership, a more innovative approach to solving missing-person cases was implemented.
Her dedication and unwavering commitment to the community enabled Chief Chanel to implement reforms that produced immediate results and linked various district government resources to benefit the community. Her efforts sparked much-needed dialogue with community members to identify and specifically address why so many vulnerable children were missing. She leveraged her position with MPD and her interest in the well-being of district residents to implement positive, lasting change.
Chief Chanel’s arduous work and steadfastness gained her national recognition and significantly contributed to the District of Columbia and the Metropolitan Police Department receiving The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s Heroes Special Recognition award. In 2018, she was the proud recipient of the 17th Annual Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Award, which honors distinguished DC Government Employees for their outstanding performance and exemplary service.
Chief Chanel also received the 2019 Community Service award from the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (N.O.B.L.E.). She received recognition from MPD for her exceptional community service, crime reduction strategies, and expertise in juvenile justice relations, along with a host of other major career accomplishments.
Chief Chanel was highly sought after for her expertise in human trafficking, she presented at the 125th International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Annual Conference and Exposition, and served as a panelist in the “Women in Leadership” and “Human Trafficking” conferences hosted by N.O.B.L.E. She is a graduate of the Major Cities Chiefs Association’s Police Executive Leadership Institute.
Chief Chanel is a graduate of George Washington University, possessing a bachelor’s degree in Police Science, and a master’s degree in Homeland Security. She has been featured in a plethora of television, radio, and online publications. As seen on CNN’s Don Lemon Tonight, Roland Martin, NBC, FOX5 DC, WUSA 9, ABC 7, and USA Today. Chief Chanel is the co-author of Unapologetically Brave, Prisoner of War in the Mind, and the visionary author of a Ladies in Law Enforcement Anthology.
